Abstract : A summary of the geographical framwork and geological context is followed by consideration of the problem of the formation of cavities in the sandstones of the Brive region. A theoretical model is proposed based on field data and the results of experimental gelifraction. The analytical methods are described. One chapter is devoted to the sedimentological methods and chemical analyses leading to the description of the climatic action which controlled the deposition and transformation of the sediments.
The stratigraphies studied date to
- The beginning of Würm III : Grotte du Loup (Lower Perigordian and Aurignacian), commune of Cosnac (Corrèze),
- The Würm IV and the Post-glacial : Ro Del Dra cave (Upper Magdalenian), commune of Végennes (Corrèze) and Chez Jugie rock-shelter (Azilian and Sauveterrian), commune of Cosnac (Corrèze).
In conclusion, it is shown that the filling of caves and rock-shelters in the sandstones can give a good idea of climatic fluctuations, particularly for cold-humid and temperate periods.
