Situations recherche et jeux mathematiques pour la formation et la vulgarisation. Exemple de la roue aux couleurs.

Abstract : What are mathematics? What does research in mathematics mean? We think that answering these questions is a way to exhibit what mathematics realy are and this way could help to find sense in this science which is usually felt badly.
In order to make progress in a research situation, a researcher can, and must often, select by himself a suitable framework of resolution, must modify the rules or allow himself to redefine objects or questions. This is precisely this type of practices which we wish to get pupils involved with, because they are the foundation of mathematical activity.
However it seems that this type of practices is not usual in class in France, and even that it is practically forbidden in many circumstances. So what can we do?
The "Maths à modeler" project has been developped in order to find and purpose situations that allow students or any other audience to discover what mathematical research is: we called them research situation.
During my PhD, I studied research situations using a suitable material support and tested them with pupils from primary school to univesity and children during holidays. One of my aims was to study and formalise the learnings developped, the conditions of its emergence, during school time or spare time, in order to allow a use of Maths à modeler situations in the context of education or popularization.
