Atomisation et évaporation dans un jet mixte hélium liquide / hélium gazeux

Abstract : This experimental work is a contribution to the study of atomization and
evaporation of a liquid by a gaz with a geometry of coaxial turbulent
jets. This phenomenum arise in rocket's cryogenic engine. We use liquid
and gazeous helium as working fluids, that allows us to reach high Reynolds
number ($R_{e} \approx 10^5$) and high Weber number ($W_{e} \approx
10^3$). The weak latent heat of liquide helium (20~J/g) makes it
possible to vary the influence of vaporization dramaticaly.

A first study, with micro thermometer, allowed us to distinguish the
effects of atomization and vaporization of the liquide by the gaz.
With high Weber number jets, the atomization process is found to be
very efficient and to provide the exhanging surface enhancement
necessary for a fast evaporation.

A second study with optical diagnostic, namely the light scattering by
the helium spray, allowed us to quantify the interface liquid gaz
disappearing caused by evaporation. In our experimental conditions ($W_{e} \approx
10^3$), we showed that the quantity of interface beyond the liquid
core decreases
exponentially with the exces of enthalpy in the gaz.

All this study has been performed in a cryogenic environnemnt, that
led us to an important instrumental development wich is presented in
this thesis.
