Modèles d'activités pédagogiques et support de l'interaction pour l'apprentissage d'une langue – le système Sampras

Abstract : Our research is about the conception of computer assisted language learning (CALL) environments. We mainly focus on design of pedagogical activities and interaction support in a microworld dedicated to French as foreign language learning. The main idea of the project is that learning a language can take place in the interaction between a learner and a companion. The activities implicate the learner in an interaction with a virtual partner (a chef) around a task to accomplish (a recipe) in a microworld (a kitchen).

We have designed different models to describe the pedagogical activities and the interaction support. Three dimensions characterize the design of the environment: task, interaction, language.The task dimension defines which tasks to give to a learner in such environment: the pedagogical task (the work and then the facilities needed to learn language), the interaction task (the interactions that takes places in the environment), the applicative task (the task the learner is meant to realize).The interaction dimension is concerned with how organizing the interaction in such a microworld given language learning principles: which interactions are expected during the activities and which interaction model can integrate them.The language dimension is about defining the language to be used in such activity and how using natural language parsing to make it efficient and support the interaction.

These models have driven the conception of a prototype. This prototype has been tested with French as foreign language beginners.
