Etude de la Circulation Océanique à Moyenne échelle à partir des Données Lagrangiennes sur la Zone des Campagnes POMME

Abstract : During one year, the POMME experiment (Programme Océan Multidisciplinaire Méso-échelle) studied a subregion of the eastern North-Atlantic between Azores and the Iberian Shelf.
It was dedicated to understanding the processes making this region a sink for atmospheric carbon
dioxyde. This work describes the mesoscale oceanic circulation. Lagrangian subsurface floats
and ARGO float trajectories were used to identify coherent eddies and determin their evolution.
Combined with other data by objective analysis, the Lagrangian data provided synoptic fields of
the horizontal circulation, in which turbulent tracer transports were estimated using Lagrangian
diagnostics. A regional implementation of theMICOM model was set up to produce hindcasts of
the circulation while assimilating Lagrangian data. Specific methods have been developed to take
into account the Lagrangian character of observations in sequential and variational assimilation
techniques.
