Élaboration et caractérisation de couches minces d'oxyde de zinc.
Application à la photoprotection du polycarbonate

Abstract : This thesis has for object the elaboration and the study of the properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) coatings in order to protect polycarbonate (PC) against photodegradation and so to increase the durability of this polymer. These ceramic coatings were deposited by r.f. magnetron sputtering in an argon-oxygen plasma. The plasma was characterised by optical emission spectroscopy according to the sputtering parameters. The ZnO deposits submitted to thermal treatments in different atmospheres (air, nitrogen, vacuum). It resulted a modification of the composition, structure, optical properties and stress of these thin films.
The adhesion of the ZnO coating on the polycarbonate film was characterised by the peeling test. The adhesion depends strongly on the deposition conditions. To improve it, different plasma treatments (Ar, Ar-O2, CO2) of short duration were applied to the polymer. They increased the surface energy of the PC, the best results are were obtained with a carbon dioxide plasma. They permitted a fonctionalisation of its surface that were put in evidence by XPS.
The study of the photodégradation of the PC showed that the protection effect of the ZnO coating depends on its thickness and its deposition conditions. The insertion of an additional alumina thin films brought a better protection of the PC because it avoided the photocatalytic of ZnO
