Aspects physico-chimiques de l'interaction bois - ciment. Modification de l'hydratation du ciment par le bois

Abstract : The use of wood in a cement material gives interesting properties to composites. However, dimensional instability and setting delay are two major problems. The aim of this work is to understand the interaction mechanism between wood and cement. We studied the influence of wood fiber and heat treated wood fiber on cement hydration. As wood chemical composition affects cement setting, data were first collected regarding wood species used (poplar) : hygroscopic properties, structural analysis, chemical analysis of the wood aqueous extracts and influence of thermal treatment on these properties.

Wood fibers alter mainly hydration of silicate phases. High inhibition occurs on portlandite and CSH precipitation. These phenomena are due to the lack of hydroxide ions in the void solution. Ettringite is stabilized and her conversion into monosulfoaluminate is delayed by wood. Total dissolution of anhydrous cement is not affected by wood.

The alkali media, imposed by cement, degrade hemicellulose, amorphous cellulose and lignin which induces a high production of organic acids in the void solution. They delay much more cement hydration than extractives do
