Une approche pétrographique et géochimique

Abstract : Prehistoric occupation of Northern Alps is known through the discovery of sites showing lithic and bone remains. An accurate understanding of prehistoric movements within a massif and alpine environment seasonal exploitation can be investigated by determining the origin of raw materials that constitute lithic artifacts of a given site.
In French Prealpes sites, the material most encountered is flint. Geological survey conducted during the present work and previously allowed to map out regional flint resources and to regroup several hundred of reference samples. Conventionally, flint is submitted to macroscopic and petrographic characterizations. However, such methods do not always provide discrimination and some sources remain hard to identify in a complex lithic environment. That is why we attempted to bring a new insight to flint characterization through geochemistry. We analysed flints from 30 sources (138 samples) and from two archaeological sites (27 artefacts) by ICP-AES and ICP-MS in a destructive way. Chemical analysis allows to distinguish flints from different geological stages. Source heterogeneity limits univoc discriminations for sources from a single geological stage, unless the outcrops are quite distant. Nevertheless, among the 22 senonian sources analysed, the la Grande-Rivoire one, located on one possible way of penetration of Vercors massif and exploited since Middle Mesolithic, shows a specific geochemical pattern. Several artefacts were assigned to this source. Analyses of an other material used during Prehistory, obsidian, highlight the specificity of flint geochemical fingerprint.
Petrographic approaches allowed us to define the procurement pattern and to source flint artefacts from eight archaeological sites by comparison to available geological samples.
Archaeological material studied through geochemistry and non-destructive approaches revealed different attitudes toward flint procurement related to sites function, their geographic location and the period considered. Main contact areas and circulation ways were also highlighted.
