Abstract : This thesis is concerned with image analysis and calibration for 3D freehand ultrasound. As it is mostly non-invasive and has a real time capability and a relatively low cost nature, 2D ultrasound is popular. 3D ultrasound imaging overcomes 2D ultrasound limitations and it makes possible to foresee news applications for medical diagnosis. The first part is dedicated to image acquisition with freehand system. We first study accuracy of magnetic trackers and compare its with vision based method. Moreover, during data acquisition, calibration step of freehand system is crucial. We have proposed on the one hand a temporal calibration method which do not use any contrainst on probe motions and on the other hand a robust and fully automatic spatial calibration method. This method has been evaluated using synthetic and real sequences and a comparison with other calibration methods have shown qualities of the proposed method. The second part concerns 3D ultrasound image analysis and we have proposed a new rigid registration method. To take into account ultrasound image specificities, we have developped a new similarity measure based on texture information. This new measure is applied for rigid registration of 3D images.
