Ondes de matière dans des potentiels périodiques en temps : étude semi-classique

Abstract : The semiclassical limit of quantum mechanics is analogous to the short-wavelength limit of electromagnetism, classical particle trajectories playing the role of optical rays. In this thesis semiclassical techniques are applied to the scattering of an atomic beam by a periodically modulated potential. Caustics, analogous to optical foci, occur in the energy domain at the limits of the classically allowed range. Just as geometrical optics is invalid at focal points, where it predicts an infinite intensity, elementary semiclassical methods such as WKB fail in the neighbourhood of caustics. A more accurate semiclassical treatment is obtained by the method of uniform approximation, which we generalise to periodic problems. The results agree remarkably well with the quantum mechanical predictions, both in the classically allowed energy range, and in the forbidden range, where the particle trajectories are complex.
