Manipulation d'atomes d'hélium métastable par laser: effet Sisyphe magnétique

Abstract : This dissertation presents the study of the cooling of atoms in the presence of a small transverse magnetic field (magnetically assisted Sisyphus effect) on a J = 1 → J' = 1 transition. The first part is dedicated to the optimization of a supersonic metastable helium beam that we used for our cooling experiments. The optimization of the beam in the purpose of trapping atoms in a magneto-optical trap is also described. The second part deals with the magnetically assisted Sisyphus effect on metastable helium. After a qualitative discussion on the magnetically assisted Sisyphus effect, we present experimental results supported by detailled theoretical calculations.
