Les limites du refroidissement laser dans les mélasses optiques à une dimension

Abstract : Laser cooling can lead to extremely low kinetic "temperatures", in the microkelvin range. In this coldest regime, one can no longer describe the atomic motion in terms of a damping force linear with velocity and a momentum diffusion coefficient. New approaches are described in the present work. The most fruitful one is based on a quantum treatment of atomic motion in the optical wells created by the laser light. In the case of 1D molasses, the two laser configurations σ+ - σ- and Ox - Oy are investigated. The minimum r.m.s. atomic momenta are found to be of the order of 6 single-photon momenta.
