Abstract : First part: Anderson localization of waves in disordered media results from interferences effects in multiple scattering. We investigate the possibility of observing localization of light in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. In order to determine the distribution of outgoing times of a photon initially inside the condensate, we use the master equation describing the evolution of the atomic density matrix. Restricting the problem to the case of fixed atomic positions, we show that outgoing times scaling exponentially with the size of the cloud constitute a signature of a localization effect.
Second Part: Evaporative cooling of an atomic beam could lead to a realization of a continuous atom laser. In order to estimate the length of the guide needed to reach quantum degeneracy, we solve Boltzmann equation by two methods. The first one is a Monte-Carlo simulation and is purely numerical ; the other one is based on an ansatz for the phase space density and is mainly analytical. We also describe the coherence properties of the beam in the quantum regime by taking into account the effects of quantum statistics and atomic interactions.
