Réalisation d'un micromaser à deux photons

Abstract : We have operated the first two-photon maser oscillator. It oscillates in a C.W. regime on a two-photon atomic transition. The use of Rubidium Rydberg states associated with a very high Q(~ 10^8) superconducting microwave cavity (f = 68 GHz) have made it possible to achieve oscillation with only a few atoms interacting with a few tens of photons (micromaser). This device combines two interesting features : it is a quantum oscillator working on an intrinsically non linear effect and it is a micromaser. It presents a great theoretical and experimental interest in the study of the quantum description of atom-field interaction. This work describes the experiment and gives a theoretical study of this device. We present first a semi-classical approach and next a full quantum description taking into account any fluctuation effects which are very important in this microscopic oscillator.
