Phases chlorées sur les objets archéologiques ferreux corrodés dans les sols : caracterisation et mécanismes de formation

Abstract : Preservation of iron artefacts is one of the main problems encountered by scientists dealing with the restoration and conservation of the metallic cultural heritage. Indeed, the deterioration after excavation of archaeological artefacts buried in soil is often associated to the presence of chlorinated phases in corrosion products. Thus, in order to answer questions about iron corrosion process related to the presence of chlorine, some high resolution techniques of materials characterisation are implemented. The coupling of µRaman and synchrotron based techniques as µXRD and µXANES offers a great potential for investigating ancient material with a microprobe and a high resolution. In fact it allows identifying without any doubt the different phases constituting the corrosion system of archaeological iron artefacts buried in soil, at microscopic scale, and propose detailed descriptions of this system. This is a necessary step before any mechanism proposal.
The samples available for analyses are cross section from iron corroded objects coming from particular archaeological excavation sites dating from 12th to 16th century AD. In addition to the common oxihydroxide containing chloride often mentioned in literature (beta-FeOOH, akaganeite) a ferrous hydroxichloride (beta-Fe2(OH)3Cl) was also found in non negligible occurrence compared to the totality of the samples analysed. This result is particularly interesting because, to our knowledge, this phase has rarely been identified in archaeological artefacts corrosion products. These finding help to gain new insights concerning the influence of such phases in iron corrosion mechanism within their precise characterisation. In order to set up more efficient desalinisation methods, the presence of these two phases in the corrosion products should be taken into account.
