L'instabilité elliptique : exemples en aéronautique et en géophysique.

Abstract : This thesis is devoted to the elliptical instability in rotating flows. Two applications have been investigated : flows in air plane wakes and the fluid dynamic of molten inner core of planets. Far from an aircraft, the flow consists in two counter-rotating vortices. Each vortex induces a strain field which deforms the other vortex and causes its destabilization. The characteristics of this instability are analyzed by theoretical and numerical means for several vortex models when an axial flow is present in their core. The second example is devoted to the stability of rotating flow in an elliptically deformed sphere. The elliptic deformation mimics the e®ect of a tide on the liquid core of a planet. The stability properties of the flow have been obtained experimentally and theoretically. A good agreement has been shown.
