ÉTUDE DE DÉFORMATION DE GOUTTE ET DE FILM MINCE INDUITE ÉLECTRIQUEMENT

Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the deformation of liquid droplets and liquid films in electrical fields, within the frame of the electrowetting approach.
The first part deals with electrostatic edge effects occurring near the three-phase line druing an electrowetting experiment. Direct drop profile and curvature measurements during electrowetting experiments showed a curvature increase close to the contact line, due to a strong electrostatic pressure near the edge of the liquid.
In the second part, macroscopic drop deformation is considered. We propose a novel electrode geometry of a bi-layered capacitor. We present a unique sample presenting a positive, negative or null wetting contrast between 2 areas, depending on the ratio of the applied voltages. We also provide analytical calculations and simulations of the electrical field in such samples, showing electrostatic edge effects. Our model predicts a lenghtscale for the transition between the two areas, which is of the order of the total thickness of the bi-layered capacitor.
The last part deals with the behaviour of a dielectric liquid film submitted to electrostatic pressure. We present preliminary experiments in a new experiemental setup. After a first stage of spinodal decomposition, we find that a thin oil layer, although non uniform, is still present between macroscopic droplets. We conclude that a better knowledge and monitoring of the actual wetting state of the oil on the solid is necessary in order to extract quantitative information on this layer.
