Abstract : In torrent risks engineering, the practitioners are at present confronted with a problem of management linked to the misunderstanding of the sediment volumes mobilized by the floods. Generally, the studies trying to estimate these volumes of sediment concern either the detrital production of slopes, or the sediment supply only in exit of the basin, but rarely the evaluation of the deposit-erosion along the talweg; they do not thus supply satisfactory methods of sediment volume estimation. It is in front of this questioning of the administrators that was born this applied research in torrent geomorphology, based on the understanding of the sediment processes of recharge and transit within the channel.
The “global” approach presented here can be complementary to the more frequent works concerning the rheology and the mechanical behavior of materials, which are applied using a more precise scale, as well as to detailed studies of certain geomorphological processes. To achieve this work numerous tools were used: photogrammetry, field observations and topographic measurements, maps on GIS and Digital Elevation Modelling, geophysics, pluviographics data and statistical treatments, and archive collections. The detailed study of the Manival watershed (Isère, North-Alps) allowed a better understanding of the functioning of the sedimentary processes and facilitated the finalization of a method of the available volume estimation. The method, which allows us to predict the maximal volume of a major debris-flow to come (PREVENT), is based on a systemic approach and on a concept of sediment dynamics within torrent system.
The method of PREVENT was afterwards applied to two other torrent basins of the same type in Isère, the Merdarêt and the Arches. The diachronic study of the sediment volumes of these torrents shows a satisfactory coherence of the results using the proposed method. This thesis thus contributes to improved scientific knowledge of the torrent processes, and brings with it theoretical and methodological tools into the field of natural risks engineering.
