Etude statistique de la stabilité des stations de géodésie spatiale. Application à DORIS

Abstract : The background of this research is the use of time series of space geodetic station coordinates to study global or local tectonic motions, a research field currently in rapid development in geodesy. Time series of station coordinates are available from several global space geodetic programs operated with GPS, SLR, and DORIS. Good quality series go back to the early or mid 1990's. They are typically provided at one-week intervals as series of cartesian coordinates in some defined geocentric terrestrial reference frame. The major signature in time series of station coordinates is usually modelled as a tri-dimensional linear drift in the local directions to the East, North and Up. The horizontal component is mostly related with the tectonic plate motion, while the Up component is assumed to reflect an uplift or subsidence. The remaining signal may be interpreted as noise related to local geophysical phenomena, instrumentation, or to the analysis strategies and modelling.We develop a new analysis method to investigate the spectral content of time series of space geodetic station coordinates in terms ofboth the main tectonic signal and the remaining "noise". Our analysis approach makes a joint use of statistical tools imported from other domains. The signal is analysed by the Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) decomposition of the three-dimensional time series, and the spectral behaviour of the series is characterised by means of the Allan variance. We give some examples of the performance of the method to qualify the stability of individual stations, and we propose a contrasted spectral description the GPS and DORIS results.
