Abstract : We assist this last decade to a considerable development of the use of organic materials as functional materials for electronics. The allied possibilities of chemistry and molecular engineering indeed open the way to the realization of materials optimized in their functionality since the scale of the molecule until that of the device.
Our engineering step consists in identifying specificities of organic materials in optoelectronics: modelling them and implementing them, by exploiting always at best their original and innovating character, taking into consideration what other materials already do. It led us to highlight functions specific to organic materials. These specific functions open applications before unimaginable with other materials. Applications to optical limiting and photovoltaic diodes are two typical examples. The richness and the diversity of organic materials make it possible to extend their field of application to many other fields like bio- sensors and nanotechnologies. The possibility of using photosensitive molecules acting as molecular engines driven under the action of light makes it possible fabricate photonic structures. Non-linear optics is used here as a tool for manufacture.
