VALIDATION DE LA TECHNIQUE DE PRELEVEMENT PAR TUBE DENUDER ANNULAIRE

Abstract : Due to their toxicity, Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) represent an important class of air pollutants to be monitored (directive 96/62/CE). Because of their physico-chemical properties, some PAH in the atmosphere are present both in vapour form and in association to particles. As the PAH partitioning process strongly influences their potential effects on human health and on the environment, the knowledge of concentrations in both phases is required. Traditionally, the high volume samplers have been used to collect simultaneously the particulate and the gaseous phase. However, this sampling technique has been shown to be subject to both positive and negative artefacts, leading to incorrect measurements of gas and particulate phase concentrations. Thus, there is a need for artefact-free methods allowing the sampling of PAH simultaneously in the two atmospheric phases. For this purpose, our study presents the validation of the denuder-based method, which potentially represents a promising sampling method for determining accurate gas-particle concentrations. The experimental validation of the tube consisted in laboratory tests to evaluate the denuder performances (using vapour produced by a dynamic generator and particles from diesel vehicle engine mounted on a dynamometer) under a wide range of experimental conditions (tested parameters: temperature, relative humidity, gas concentrations, sampling flow rate, sampling duration, particle size). Further experiments were carried out in the field with real gas-phase mixture in order to study the matrix effects on the denuder performances. Finally the denuder tube sampling method was compared to the conventional method using diesel exhausts. Results from these investigations indicate that the denuder sampling method can improve the determination of PAH in both particulate and gaseous phases over a range of conditions covering the experimental conditions encountered in field sampling. According to our study, the denuder-based method improves the measurement of atmospheric PAH in the gas and particulate phases.
