Contribution sur les forces d'histoire exercées sur des inclusions solides ou fluides à faibles nombres de Reynolds

Abstract : The goal of this work is to carry out theoretical and experimental studies on the effects of the history force acting on fluid or solid inclusions moving in a viscous medium. This force also called as the memory force is often neglected in the momentum balance. It depends mainly on the vorticity diffusion in the internal and the external flows as well as on the geometry of the inclusion. It is generally expressed in an integral form retaining all the history of the acceleration of the particle, and gives an integro-differential form to the equation of the motion. Initially, we considered spherical inclusions and we determined the analytical expressions of this force for each particle type: viscous, gaseous or solid. This was carried out by the determination of the hydrodynamic fields by using a general method based on the formulation of the stream functions in series of the Gegenbauer functions. By using an original experimental installation, we validated the theoretical results and we measured precisely the significant memory effects on the trajectories of oscillating spherical particles at low and intermediate Reynolds numbers. In the second time, we used techniques of the regular perturbations to extend the theoretical formulation followed in the case of the spherical particles, and to determine the expression of the unsteady drag acting on an oscillating ellipsoidal droplet. The obtained results enabled us to highlight a new history term acting on the spheroid which is due to the geometry of the particle and its variation from the spherical shape.
