Modelisation des ionospheres planetaires et de leur rayonnement: La Terre et Mars

Abstract : The comparative study of the planetary atmospheres is a young and interesting science, because of the diversity of the situations. As part of this programme, the exploration of Mars is very challenging. This work concerns more particularly the modeling of the martian ionosphere and of its airglow. the ionospheric model is based on a terrestrial coupled kinetic and fluid model. The productions and the densities of the ions H+, 0+, at et cot and of the thermal electrons are especially described, and also the thermal electrons temperatures. The Viking 1 lander measurements are well reproduced. In order to get familiarized with the study of a planetary airglow, we developed a model of the atomic oxygen dayglow (558 et 630 nm) for the Earth atmosphere. A very good agreement has been found between the model and measurements from an interferometer. Thanks to this experience, we modeled the emissions lines in the martian atmosphere at three wavelenghts (135, 288 and 297 nm), corresponding to the cot ions and to the atomic oxygen. Comparisons with Mariner data were good.
