Étude de l'extinction par la poussière interstellaire dans les lentilles gravitationnelles

Abstract : After reminding some definitions and results related to "extinction" by dust in our Galaxy and in nearby galaxies, we briefly describe the gravitational lens phenomenon as well as the physical processes which may affect the observed photometry of the multiple images of a background quasar.

We then present an original method to estimate the redshift of the
deflector ("the lens galaxy") of a gravitational lens system. This method is based on the effects caused by the extinction of light
due to interstellar dust within the lens.

After a presentation of the method and some preliminary considerations, numerical simulations are carried out in order to test the method and to estimate its accuracy. The method is then applied to real data.

Later, we attempt to extract the extinction law of the lensing galaxy from the observed spectra of the multiple images of the background source.

Lastly, we use the principal components analysis technique to classify an extinction law among a collection of known ones. Again, after a short presentation of the principal components analysis and its application to extinction laws, numerical simulations are used to assess the reliability of the method, which is also applied to a real case.
