Magnétisme et transport polarisé en spin : de la couche mince aux dispositifs à électronique de spin

Abstract : In a first chapter, the microscopic and macroscopic magnetism of systems with reduced lateral dimension are invoked. The magnetic properties of thin films, submicronic dot arrays and self organised nanostructures made of hexagonal cobalt (0001) are studied at the macroscopic and microscopic scale. In this first chapter, recent results obtained in the field area of exchange bias are also summarised. In a second chapter, the tunnel transport in planar magnetic tunnel junctions is invoked and the correlation between interfacial magnetisation distribution and spin dependent tunnel resistance is made. In this field area, several research axis have been developed : - growth of alternative tunnel barriers with low barrier heights (less than 1eV). - development of alternative methods to analyse tunnel junctions. - correlation between domain structures and spin polarised tunneling. - epitaxial tunnel junctions : band structure effects and high tunnel magnetoresistance, antiferromagnetic coupling mediated by tunnelling of spin polarised electrons. In a third chapter, magnetic sensors base on magnetic tunnel junctions have been build up. In this field area, several research axis have been developed : - magnetic tunnel junctions with an hysteretic response used as a two dimensional magnetometer. - an antiferromagnetic / ferromagnetic bilayer used as a detection layer in a magnetic tunnel junction. - crossed magnetisation configuration with one magnetisation perpendicular to film plane used in a magnetic tunnel junction to build up a linear magnetic sensor for high field detection. In the last chapter, the spin dependent transport in multilayers with two tunnel barriers is invoked. The fundamental interest of those structures relays on the study of the hot electron transport perpendicular to the film plane. This topic has been developed from the experimental and theoretical point of view using the free electron model. As a conclusion, a spin diode is proposed as a short time project that combines the expertise of chapters 2, 3 et 4.
