Abstract : Modelling of aquifer water transfer processes is a decisive tool for sustainable water resources management, especially in India where depletion of the groundwater level is extremely severe due to intensive irrigation pumping. The objective of this Ph.D study is focussed on the simulation of spatially distributed unsaturated deep drainage water fluxes, expressed at the watershed scale. The work, which is part of the Indo-French collaboration programme initiated by BRGM, is applied to the Maheshwaram watershed located in Andhra Pradesh State. The numerical tool chosen for this study, is the modelling system “POWER” (Planner Oriented Watershed modelling system for Environmental Responses) developed by the laboratory LTHE in conjunction with the hydro-informatics company Hydrowide. The work starts with the description of the field work, necessary for in-situ estimation of the different soil hydraulic parameters (such as the water retention and hydraulic conductivity parameters) and soil textural parameters (e.g., cumulative particle-size distribution and thickness of soil horizons). To extrapolate this locally measured information to a larger scale such as imposed by the spatial resolution of the modelling system, a special fuzzy classification technique is developed, which uses a combination of geological, pedological, soil physical and topographical information. This data is subsequently finalized in a so-called Soil Map necessary for the application of POWER. Next, the numerical results are presented. Using a GIS-based spatial discretization technique proposed by the POWER modelling system, the entire watershed is subdivided in 3171 irregular entities. Three levels of GIS information are used, i.e., the DTM, the soil map and the land-use map. The modelling system is calibrated on five soil moisture profiles measured locally by the use of a neutron probe. The simulation of the spatially distributed soil water fluxes calculated over the entire watershed is carried out at a daily base over a three years time period (i.e., the years 2001 to 2003).
