Inversion de spectres infrarouges en émission thermique de la basse atmosphère terrestre enregistrés sous ballon par transformée de Fourier en visée au nadir : préparation de la mission spatiale IASI

Abstract : In the framework of the preparation to the space mission IASI/MetOp, the LPMA is obtaining thermal infrared emission spectra of the lower atmosphere in the nadir viewing geometry using the IASIballoon experiment. From these spectra, we have examined in this thesis the retrieval of columns and profiles of species of atmospheric importance by combining a radiative transfer model and an inversion algorithm. Processing spectra recorded during the IASI02 balloon flight allowed us to determine the O3 profile as well as CH4, N2O and CO total columns. These results were compared with those obtained with the SCIAMACHY instrument onboard the ENVISAT satellite. Among the tools available for solving inverse problems, weighting functions, averaging kernels and informational entropy were used to establish fitting procedures and to improve the quality of the retrievals. The impact of spectral resolution was assessed by comparing retrievals based on IASI-balloon spectra with retrievals performed on IASI-like spectra generated by convolution of the experimental balloon spectra in order to match the IASI/MetOp resolution. Based on detailed simulations of the absorption/emission by various gases, a cell containing a mixture of CO and NH3 has been proposed and later produced by LPMA for CNES. Together with our gas cell model, it can now be used to perform (in a thermal vacuum chamber before launch) a detailed characterization of the spectral performances of the IASI satellite instrument.
