Les communications multipoints dans les réseaux haut débit multimédia : Le multicast en environnement IP sur ATM

Abstract : New multimedia applications require more than a significant bandwidth increase. They need new functionalities from the network, such as multipoint communications and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. To satisfy those requirements, we suggest building an architecture enabling both multipoint and QoS on top of switching technologies. As an application of integrating new functionalities with switching technologies, we suggest operating RSVP over ATM Networks. Several approaches to run IP over ATM are currently used, but none of them provide an efficient multipoint service with QoS to manage the full RSVP model. In a first contribution, we focus on a CLIP solution and extend it. The RSVP model is fully provided by our solution while preserving dynamic and heterogeneous QoS. It relies upon multiple multipoint trees to avoid intrinsic ATM model limitations. This solution has been implemented in the MIRIHADE testbed. The use of switching technologies with connection-oriented signalling protocols is inefficient in providing new functionalities. Therefore, we propose using an hop-by-hop signalling protocol to cope with our needs. A new approach, named IP Switching, closely integrates routing and switching, and provides local ATM cut-through while using only IP signalling. In a second contribution, we improve this approach by introducing RSVP/IntServ. This solution, named ``RSVP Switching'', is currently under experimentation in the SAFIR testbed for a distributed interactive simulation project with stringent QoS requirements.
