Abstract : To apprehend mechanical ventilation/breathing system as dynamical system, we built a mathematical model of interacting objects. This model exhibits two behavior : oscillation and dumping. We introduced breathing variability in the model by the hypothesis of chaotic determinism and used chaos theory tools. We investigated chaos in breathing in experimental data from spontaneous breathing and various added resistive loads. Similarities between behavior of simulated and experimental data, indicates that using non linear analysis and especially the largest Lyapunov exponent as index of breathing variability, as well as in choosing model is realistic and suggest that breathing system may be deterministically chaotic. However, we have not demonstrated that ventilatory system is chaotic.
