A la recherche des énergies extrêmes : détection des rayons cosmiques avec l'Observatoire Pierre Auger

Abstract : The cosmic rays spectrum seems to extend beyond the GKZ cut-off; their production mode at these energies and their propagation through space are not well understood. Despite of extremely low fluxes, these ultra high energy particles are detected on Earth by atmospheric showers which reach the ground. Simulations attempt to reproduce their behavior extrapolating the cross-sections. The Pierre Auger Observatory detect these showers using fluorescence telescopes and an array of Cerenkov tanks, which will finally cover 3000 km2, to accumulate sufficient statistics. The acquisition system developed at the LPNHE ensures the communication with the array and the data recording. A software developed during the thesis allows the visualization and the reconstruction of the events candidates. The systematic and random errors have been identified and reduced in all the fits, so that the determination of the direction and the energy of the primary cosmic ray is right and precise. The identification of the primary nature by the shower age improves these results.
