Amplification paramétrique dans les fibres optiques pour les télécommunications à haut débit

Abstract : This thesis deals with Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers (FOPA) for telecommunication applications and generation of supercontinuum in optical fibers. Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers has a great potential for telecommunication applications because of their wide and tuneable gain bands and its frequency conversion properties. However, lot of studies have to be done to verify that these amplifiers are potentially available for telecommunication applications. We theoretically investigate different solutions to avoid stimulated Brillouin scattering potentially stimulated by the strong continuous pump power used in parametric amplifiers. We study the impact of different phase modulation schemes, usually used to avoid SBS, on the amplification of continuous signal and of intensity modulated signals. Our theoretical results are in agreement with experimental studies realised by Alcatel, and we show that phase modulation of the pump induces parasitic intensity modulations on the amplified signals. Different solutions are proposed to avoid or reduce this phenomenon. We also demonstrate that correct noise figure measurements have to be done in the radiofrequency domain. Then, we simulate WDM signals amplification in a typical fiber optical parametric amplifier configuration. We find that a particular spectral position of WDM channels against pump wavelength allows the reduction of parasitic parametric processes between pump and signals. We study the impact of longitudinal fluctuations of the zero dispersion wavelength on parametric gain curves. We use this sensibility to develop an original method to map these fluctuations in optical fibers of only a few hundred meters. Finally, we propose a theoretical and experimental investigation on the asymmetric broadening of continuous and partially coherent waves propagating in anomalous dispersion regime. Firstly, it is demonstrated that modulation instability, generation of higher order solitons and of dispersive waves explains this phenomenon. Secondly, we show that fiber lasers should be used to pump FOPAs in particular cases. Concerning the generation of supercontinuum, we propose a simple experimental scheme, by using a microchip laser source and a standard telecommunication fiber to generate a spatially single mode supercontinuum exceeding 1100 nm.
