Filtrage Modal et Recombinaison de Grands Télescopes. Contributions à l'Instrument FLUOR

Abstract : Single-mode optical fibers bring a solution to the filtering of wavefront defects and to calibration on the visibilities in stellar interferometry. The recombination instrument FLUOR (Fiber Linked Unit for Optical Recombination), set on the IOTA interferometer in Arizona, is based on this concept. Ground-based large interferometers currently in the design stage will combine single-mode optical fibers and adaptive optics to provide maximum precision and sensitivity. The interfacing of these systems of Adaptive Optics with optical fibers was studied. Analytical laws of dimensioning and prediction of the performances was derived and were confirmed by computer simulations. A qualitative comparison between the spatial filtering provided by a single-mode optical fiber and by a pinhole makes it possible to conclude on the superiority of the first method within the framework of an interferometric use. Limitations in rate of acquisition reduced the possibilities of the instrument FLUOR. A fast system of sweeping of the optical path difference was established in order to better sample the transfer function and to decrease the statistical error on the estimate of the visibilities. Simultaneously with these technical improvements, the former version of the instrument was used for scientific observations. Series of measurements were carried out on pulsating stars. The visibilities are estimated with a precision better than the percent and allow a comparison with the theoretical models representing these objects.
