Abstract : An experimental study has been performed in a Mach 2.3 shock wave/ detached turbulent boundary layer interaction (oblique shock reflection on a plane wall), to understand the physical phenomena taking place in such flows. In particular the generation and the development of low frequencies is analysed. Space and time organization of this interaction has been examined for several flow deflection angles (from 7 to 9.5°). One and two point measurements were performed with wall pressure transducers or constant temperature anemometers. Data analysis led to characterize different regions: the reflected shock wave is characterized by its low frequency oscillations and moves over an extent varying from one to two boundary layer thicknesses. A dimensionless frequency associated with the shock low frequency motion (Strouhal number) is proposed, which leads to the comparison of our results with those obtained in other types of interaction. The detachment zone shows great similarities with subsonic detached flows, with remarkable specificities due to the flow compressibility. The connections between the unsteady shock wave and the detached region have been investigated and the mechanisms explaining their nature in other configurations of interaction were also studied. Moreover, the spanwise spatial organization of the detachment was explored with Particle Image Velocimetry measurements and revealed, for the highest shock intensities, two counter-rotative vortices developing inside the recirculating bubble. Their mean rate of rotation determined near the wall is found of same order as the frequency related to the reflected shock motion.
