La localisation de la déformation dans les milieux granulaires

Abstract : This study is devoted to strain localisation in Granular materials. Both experimental and theoretical results have been obtained.

The first part of the thesis is a review of the methods and theories about rupture in sols mechanics and more generally, in solid mechanics. The classical framework of Shear Band analysis is presented, and the main results available for different classes of materials are discussed.
The second part describes an experimental study of strain localisation in sand specimens tested in a specially designed plane strain apparatus. Strain field measurement are performed, using stereophogrammetry. The onset of localisation, and development of shear bands is described in details, and the influence of different experimental and material parameters is investigated.

The third part is a theoretical study of the extension of the classical (Rice-Hutchinson) approach of shear banding (so called shear band analysis, leading to Rice bifurcation criterion) to the case of thorougly non-linear rate-type constitutive equations. A heuristic model is developed and analysed using the extended framework, with consistent and interesting results.
