Processus atomiques cohérents appliqués à l'analyse spectrale très large bande de signaux radio fréquence

Abstract : In this thesis we apply spectral hole burning (SHB) in rare earth ion doped crystals (REIC) to optical signal processing. We present the first experimental demonstration of an instantaneous wideband radio frequency (RF) spectrum analyzer, taking advantage of REIC spectral selectivity. At low temperature, the SHB technology offers outstanding performances in terms of bandwidth and time-bandwidth product. The spectrometer concept relies on the angular separation of the optically carried RF signal spectral components. The analyzer operation is comprised of two steps. First, one engraves wavelength-multiplexed monochromatic gratings in the REIC. This engraving step shapes the spatial-spectral filter in the medium. The RF signal is then put on an optical carrier by means of an electro-optic modulator. This modulated beam is directed to the SHB crystal that achieves the angular separation of the different spectral components. SHB spectrum analysis has been demonstrated with 3.3GHz instantaneous bandwidth together with 100 channel capacity, and resolution as low as 500 kHz. The optical dynamic range is 35dB, limited by the detector. This architecture features dynamic zooming capability on a specific spectral region, which improves the resolution.
