Caractérisation du transport colloïdal du zinc en milieu sableux

Abstract : This study deals both with the theoretical issue of colloidal transport and the more practical one of infiltration bassins management. Actually, even if many field studies have pointed out the main role played by colloids in pollutant transport, this phenomenon has not yet been fully studied and not taken into account in predictive transport models. The conditions under which it becomes predominant are not clearly assessed. In this way, the main aim of this study is the characterization of zinc transport facilitated by bacterial colloids. Zinc is used as a model pollutant characteristic of urban waters pollution and colloids are Pseudomonas putida bacteria as a biofilm in porous media. Experiments have been carried out in non-saturated Loire sand columns. Extra batch experiments have been performed to investigate surface reactivity. Results deal with the three main conditions to obtain colloidal transport : affinity between colloidal particles and pollutants, colloidal movement in the media, and facilitated transport of pollutants. First, surface proton titrations and adsorption batches have shown the high affinity of the cell surfaces for zinc, particularly when cells are arranged as a biofilm. Thus, solution composition and ionic strength have significant influence on biofilm stability and consequently on mobile colloid formation. Hence required conditions are obtained to get facilitated transport of zinc by bacterial colloids; however facilitated zinc transport has not been directly quantified, but observed through indirect methods. It seems necessary to take into account, under certain conditions, facilitated bacterial transport of metals in infiltration bassins soils.
