Abstract : The engineering design process plays a crucial role in performance and competitive advantage for manufacturing industries. Its implementation within industrial organisations has changed during the last decade,shifting form tasks juxtaposition and "over the wall design" to concurrent engineering and integrated design. Design methods and tools have to fit these new design schemes.To cope with this mutation,this thesis first addresses the issue of design process modelling,by opposing to phase-based classical models the co-evolution problem/solution and an iterative four-activities set.Design support,in regard to this model,is then investigated through an opportunistic (i.e.apart from any preestablished scheme)use of existing design tools.An object- class structure is proposed to implement this support.
