Médiatisation et médiation pédagogique dans un environnement multimédia: Le cas de l'apprentissage de l'anglais en Histoire de l'art à l'université

Joseph Rézeau
Abstract : This PhD thesis relates an action research in the domains of esp and call. This research aims at change in and improvement of, an esp context, thanks to the introduction of innovating technologies and critical reflection. The theoretical and research literature from the fields of education, learning psychology and second language acquisition is examined, to identify relevant hypotheses and models. Some ternary models of the learning situation are examined, and the position of the teaching process is re-defined. In order to introduce call teaching materials in that situation, a new, quaternary model is proposed. The concepts of mediatisation and mediation are re-defined in the light of Rabardel's own concepts of instrumentalisation and instrumentation. The “action” part of the research consists in the development of a multimedia educational software which – it is hypothesised – will have beneficial effects on the motivation and learning strategies of our students. A secondary hypothesis is that the mediational value of the multimedia instrument thus created is directly dependent on the mediatisation action of its author. This software has been trialled over a period of six years, during which data has been collected and saved in three forms: answers to questionnaires, tracking user activity into computer log files and recording verbal interaction of students working in pairs at the computer. This data has subsequently been submitted to quantitative and qualitative analysis, multiple analysis, and discourse analysis.
