La Station Laser Ultra Mobile - De l'obtention d'une exactitude centimétrique des mesures à des applications en océanographie et géodésie spatiales

Abstract : The French Transportable Laser Ranging Station (FTLRS) is a highly mobile satellite laser ranging system unit weighing only 300 kg. This station, with on-site fast installation, is dedicated to the tracking of satellites equipped with retroreflectors. The are fascinating uses in the geosciences for such a system: precise positioning, oceanography, time transfer, terrestrial reference frames, orbitography... The idea is to use a very small 13 cm diameter telescope installed on a high precision motorised theodolite, a laser also compact, and an avalanche photodiode which makes the detection possible at a single photoelectron level. It started its operational phase during a probatory experiment in Corsica in late 1996, but instabilities in quality of the signal were exhibited. This work deals first with the FTLRS changes directed toward increasing the station's accuracy to reach the 1 cm level and participate to the calibration/validation campaign of the oceanographic mission JASON-1 (2001). Then, the instrumental precision is checked with laboratory experiments and the results are quite satisfactory regarding the improvement efficiency.
Another aspect of this work concerns an analysis developed in order to estimate the new accuracy and stability of the FTLRS after technical changes. Based on a collocation experiment between the two fixed laser ranging stations of the OCA, the method consists in station coordinates and mean instrumental bias adjustments from LAGEOS reference orbits. The temporal series of this precise positioning evidence seasonal variations. A local comparison of the altitude variations with laser positioning, permanent GPS receiver and absolute gravimeter measurements is performed. These temporal variations are exhibited at a world scale (other laser stations) and their geophysical interpretation deals with terrestrial and polar tides and atmospheric loading effects.
