Etude d'une source solide monomode de photons uniques constituée par une boîte quantique semi-conductrice dans une microcavité optique

Abstract : The development of single photon sources is of fundamental concern in the field of quantum information processing. In this work we study the first single photon source based on the implementation of a quantum dot inside a pillar microcavity. We first study the microphotoluminescence properties of a single quantum dot and we identify the main emission lines (X and XX, associated to the exciton and biexciton states). The generation of quantum states of light (antibunching) is demonstrated on this emitter by photon correlation experiments on the X line (and also XX line), under pulsed and continuous excitation. Cross-correlation experiments between X and XX lines provide strong evidence of the generation of pairs of photons correlated in time. We then demonstrate quantum cavity electrodynamics effects in solid state by placing a quantum dot on resonance with the fundamental mode of a micropillar. A shortening of the lifetime of this emitter by a factor at least equal to 3 suggests that, due to the Purcell effect, most of the photons are collected into the same single mode. The polarization of the emitted photons can be controlled by using elliptical micropillars. For the first time, we underline the importance of extrinsic cavity losses due to diffusion by sidewalls roughness. Taking into account this effect leads to novel rules for the design of micropillars. The single photon source realized has a probability of collecting one photon per pulse close to 40% and a probability of emitting more than one photon equal to 1%. At last, correlation experiments in function of temperature show a moderate degradation of the antibunching behavior with temperature suggesting the operation of the source at 100 K.
