Couplage d'une microsphère accordable et d'une «puce à atomes». Vers des expériences «intégrées» d'électrodynamique quantique en cavité optique

Abstract : This thesis is devoted to the coupling of a tunable microsphere cavity with an "atom chip", where the atoms are magnetically trapped.

To control the interaction with the atoms, the microsphere has to be made tunable. By stretching the sphere, a whispering gallery mode has been tuned over 400 GHz. The miniaturization of the coupling device allows us to excite a mode in a UHV chamber, where the atoms are manipulated.

Moreover, by means of a multi-layers chip, we can implement a magnetic conveyor belt to transport the atoms from a loading region to the cavity, over 6 cm at a speed of 10 cm/s. By going there and back 2 times, the atoms have been transported
over 24 cm. This transport of trapped atoms solve one of the greatest problems concerning the coupling between cold atoms and the modes of a microsphere.
