1 iMAGIS - Models, Algorithms and Geometry for Computer Generated Image Graphics

Abstract : After a post-doctoral at University of Toronto at DGP, I have been recruited in October,1997 at GRAVIR laboratory (UMR 5527 CNRS-UJF-INPG-INRIA; headed by Claude Puech), in iMAGIS team. My work is inserted in the field of Computer Graphics, the team being more specifically interested in the treatment of complex scenes. Here the term "complex" concerns multiple dimensions, such as the a nature of phenomena (optic and mecanics), of shapes and materials, and the quantity of related information. This dissertation present the approaches I followed to try to represent the complexity of nature, in the hope to produce synthetic images and animations, as well as specific pieces of work I did in this spirit after my PhD. In the first chapter I introduce the context of image production, as well as the three main axis I chose to deal with complexity, namely multiscaling, proceduralism, and phenomenological simulation. In the second chapter, I detail my research themes, and review related existing work.In the third, I summarize my contributions in these various themes. The content of my principal articles is reproduced in Annexes A to D.
