Restitution des profils de dégagement de chaleur latente par radiométrie hyperfréquence. Application aux cyclones tropicaux

Abstract : Atmospheric circulation is driven by heating exchanges involved in condensation processes in precipitation. Hurricanes are huge thermal machines that transport energy from warm to cold regions through latent heat implied in condensation processes. Latent heat estimates should improve forecasting of the evolution of these disastrous system which are detectable by satellite. TRMM, launched in 1997, allows retrieving of hydrometeors contents thanks to coupled radar/radiometer (PR/TMI) measurements. In this context, an bayesian algorithm, using an original data base built form PR measurements, was developped. This retrieval method, applied to hurricane Bret (1999), was validated by comparison with results from airborne and groundbased data. The energetic structure typical for three very different stages of Bret's evolution are analysed in terms of energy budgets. Systematic studies on pre-hurricane and hurricanes could be conducted using this method to provide a diagnostic tool for the system's evolution.
