Techniques d'interaction avec un espace de données temporelles

Abstract : Temporal data are frequently manipulated in multiple application domains (banking, clinical, geographical, etc.). Despite the diversity of techniques proposed to visualize such data, we note a lack of appropriate design approaches and methods. In this thesis, we propose an approach to visualization design and more generally to the formulation interaction techniques with temporal data. To guarantee the usability of these techniques, we focus on the characteristics of the manipulated data and user tasks. This work is multi-disciplinary and contributes to two research domains in computer science: Human-Computer Interaction and Databases. This research work contributes to the design of interactive systems for visual analysis of temporal data. In this context, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes existing visualization techniques in terms of their visualization processes. This taxonomy is based on the visualization process proposed by Chi. In collaboration with geographers, we identified a list of pertinent user tasks in terms of temporal data manipulation. Based on this list, we designed and implemented five interaction techniques adapted to the identified user tasks. We integrated these techniques to implement INVEST (Interactive Visualization and Explorative System of Temporal data) which is a multi-technique framework for visual analysis of temporal data. Each technique is a view of the same data space. INVEST implements a tool for selecting suitable techniques according to given user tasks
