Abstract : Visualizing threedimensional scenes is becoming a central step in digital design and validation processes. A major obstacle to a generalized usage is the complexity of the involved phenomena, as it contradicts the necessary goal of interactivity. This report presents some recent research, notably some of the author's, towards proper treatment of this complexity, under all its various forms. One example is geometric complexity (due to the number of objects or their complicated shape), which can be handled by hierarchical computation techniques. The radiosity method using a hierarchy of clusters allows the simulation of complex scenes at different levels of detail. Another source of complexity is the radiometric properties of the objects (light sources or reflectors), and we propose algorithms for the manipulation of directional data. Finally, we discuss the control of the simulation quality and of the approximation level.
