Extensions multimédia de la messagerie MMS

Abstract : The current decade is confirming the progress accomplished in processing and tranmission technologies for the several previous decades. There is an overwhelming revolution in the design of distributed data processing systems. Network technologies allowing gigabits per second transmission rates are becoming commonplace. Manufacturing and process control systems are examples of distributed computer systems that will be influenced by the recent technology achievements. Audio, video, animated X-rays and infrared images are the new types of information presented in the form of continuous media data that might be integrated to automated systems. We propose multimedia extensions to the OSI communication standard for distributed automated systems as a solution to the requirements of continuous media data flows in such systems. The MMS communication model is a client-server model based on message passing. After a brief presentation of the requirements of distributed multimedia systems in general, we exhibit the aspects of MMS that make it unable to handle sustained processing and transfer of continuous data media flows. We then propose an extension to the MMS object model and services allowing it to fulfill the requirements of continuous media data flows. We finally study a prototype implementation of new objects and services on an experimental testbed. The testbed is made up of UNIX and Windows NT workstations connected by ATM communications infrastructures. It will be used for performance-profiling of different implementation choices of the MMS extension model.
