Architectures distribuées temps réel fondées sur ATM

Abstract : The progress in communication networks enables the deployment of new distributed applications. Nevertheless, large bandwidth and delay guaranty requirements grow with multimedia traffic. These constraints should be taken into consideration at the network as well as the workstation levels. This thesis proposes the architectur of an entire communication system based on ATM that satisfies the real-time distributed application requirements. In particular, audio and video streams must be integrated efficiently, and must operate with other traffics such as alarms and traditional data. The state of the art on high speed machine architecture allows to better determine the problems raised by the use of new communication technologies. It presents numerous studies in this field and shows that they only gives partial solutions to the problem. The proposed communication system architecture supports several audio/video devices on a unique workstation, allows to build various network topo! logies, and provides path redundancy. The addition of a micro-controller on the network interface board offers high-level real-time services thanks to the tele-DMA concept. Thus, applications can take advantage of the ATM technology. Furthermore, a special protocol organization allows to support in an efficient way real-time services as well as traditional distributed applications. Concerning the inter-device communication, a source flow control is proposed in order to guaranty a bounded transmission delay for real-time messages. The re-use of existing application, the signaling, the network management and the recovery process when the network fails are discussed. Finally, the communication system general performances, and the periodic real-time update of control variables implemented on the micro-controller are evaluated.
