Abstract : The interpretation of exploration seismic data is a long and difficult work that requires geological and geophysical knowledge. Computer science is a useful tool to speed up the process by enhancement of interesting areas made of continuities (horizons) and discontinuities (faults, saltdomes ...). Wavelet analysis is perfectly adapted to continuities and discontinuities study and then to seismic images. In this work we briefly present the wavelet's theory and the different algorithms of wavelet transform. We discuss the problem of representation too. We introduce the notion of directional wavelet that can detect discontinuities in a given direction. We study then some properties of that wavelet. After several applications to seismic images are given. A filtring method based on the ''algorithme à trous'' for the improvement of horizon picking is presented. A fault detection can be made with the use of directional wavelets. This detection can be improved by an adapted prefiltring and the angle-space-scale representation.
