TELA : Structure et algorithmes pour la traduction fondée sur la mémoire

Abstract : This study is about Memory-based Translation Tools (MTT). The first part gives a state of the art. Then some weaknesses are raised up, and it is shown that they are mainly originated in the type of internal structure used in these tools for data representation. Therefore two complementary representations are proposed: a primary one based on XML, where the data is sequential; and an analytic one formed of floored and linked lattices: the TELAM structure. The latter dispatches the data on the lattices, according to their "nature". This second part ends with a abstract model for TELAM, called TELA. An object oriented and an XML based representations are proposed for TELA. The third part proposes some algorithms for TELAM structures, and gives an evaluation of the static and dynamic complexity of TELA structures. The notion of similarity is defined in order to calculate the proximity of two translation segments. This is realised by counting the number of elementary edition operations that transforms the first segment into the latter. These operations are applied at each floor of the TELAM structure of the two segments. Two algorithms, based on Wagner and Fisher work (1974), are proposed: the X' algorithm helps to evaluate the edition distance between two segments, and the Y' algorithm gives a possible suite of elementary operations that transforms one segment into the other. It is then shown how to use TELAM structures and X' and Y' algorithms in order to design a new Memory-based Translation system. This one is able to adapt and combine translation units stored in the memory. It also allows to transfer non textual objects and the layout from the entry document to its translation.
