Abstract : This thesis proposes a novel approach for computer vision, insisting on the role played by the information and the knowledge present in a computer vision system. The knowledge can be seen as a goal to be achieved by the methods involved, or as an instrument used for guiding these methods. This double role played by the knowledge is stressed by putting forward the necessary management of all available information at all time to achieve the recognition task. A distributed approach is proposed, using a multi-agent system, where an agent is specialized in the recognition of a particular concept of the image. The generic agent model is comprised of four basic behaviors : perception (region growing and edge following), interaction (fusion of primitives), differenciation (primitive interpretation) and reproduction (agent placement strategy). These behaviors take decisions using multi-criteria evaluations, where the criteria are specialized for the different concepts. The agents must adapt themselves and cooperate with others to accomplish their tasks, at the local level as well as at the agent group level (working on the same perceptual group). This system is applied to the recognition of living cells. Each cell is decomposed in several concepts (nucleus, pseudopod, cytoplasm, ...) which are the basic concepts to specialize the agents.
